How we help

We can provide both advice and practical help

MND Association Visitors will visit any person living with MND to offer advice and support and will, if desired, maintain regular contact.

Our branch will help people living with MND by

  • buying  equipment
  • giving them financial help to enable them to install equipment in their homes or cars
  • arranging respite for their carers

In theory some of this could be supplied by the NHS but because MND progresses so quickly time is of the essence and the local branch of the MND association can arrange things almost immediately without any requirement for means testing.

Over the past few years our branch has helped many people living with MND purchase equipment and services to make their lives, their families’ lives, and the lives of the people who care for them, easier.

Here are some examples;

We have helped people stay in their own homes by contributing to the cost of installing ramps, purchasing adjustable double beds, converting bathrooms to wet rooms, installing Clos-o-mats (conventional toilets with integral washing and drying) and hiring stairlifts.

We have helped to keep people mobile by contributing to the cost of purchasing wheelchairs, car hoists and adapting cars

Feedback;

“I would like to express my thanks to the MND Association for their kind contribution towards my new power chair.  It has been simply liberating!
Without the chair I was stuck in the house and whilst I can still drive,  it was no use once I arrived, as I can only walk a few steps.  With the chair I can now take my 4 year old son to the swings, school and into town.  Now the Spring is here I am out every day in it and know all the short cuts.  My son tells me to put it into ‘Sports Mode’ and we have races in the park – he always beats me of course!”

We have helped people feel more comfortable by paying for complementary therapy sessions such as aromatherapy and acupuncture

We have helped people to continue to keep their pets by organising a dog walking service and to maintain their own personal standards by paying for an ironing service

We have helped families to continue to have fun by paying for young children of people living with MND to attend holiday playschemes.
